How to create a comfortable home workspace
If you’re working from home, a comfortable and practical workspace is a must! Here are some tips to help you get organized.
Find and define your space
Setting up a home office requires careful thought. You need to find the place that best suits your and your family’s needs. Ideally, you will need an enclosed space away from distractions. If you don’t have a door, consider installing a screen or curtain. You should also get a decent set of headphones to help keep you on task.
Furnish wisely
Your home office furniture is a key element. Don’t settle for an old chair or desk. It’s important to choose furniture that is both practical and ergonomic, especially since back pain often contributes to fatigue.
This is particularly the case for your chair. You’ll spend more time in it than you realize. Good office ergonomics are essential. Try a few models and ask for advice. Check what adjustments you can make. Focussing on comfort is a winning move!
Optimize your space
Arrange your furniture to maximize your space and improve efficiency. Consider your tasks: what kind of set-up would help you work optimally and smoothly? Where is the best place for your electronic devices, printer, filing cabinets, etc.?
The might of light
Your workspace should always be well lit. Set up your desk to take advantage of natural light from a window and try to have a range of light sources, such as ceiling lights, recessed lights, floor lamps and table lamps. You can then play around with light intensity and get the light just right whatever the time of day.
Check your equipment
To work efficiently, you need to make sure your equipment is functional and suits your new home office needs. You should therefore evaluate them according to set criteria. If you’re going to be working from home, you may need a more powerful internet connection, extra heating, air conditioning, a dehumidifier, and more. The better suited the equipment, the more comfortable you will be working in this new environment.
Maximize storage
Storage is key to organizing your home office. Aim for as much storage as possible. This will make your space more open and tidier, creating a better vibe for working. Filing cabinets, carts, drawers, decorative boxes, bins, boards, bulletin boards, bookcases, shelves—you have options galore!
Create the right vibe
Given the amount of time you will spend in your home office, opt for a decor that is true to your tastes and helps you feel at ease. Choose a favourite colour that can be both inspiring and calming.
Add some greenery, as plants are great air purifiers. Put up photos, paintings or inspirational quotes to surround yourself with some special motivation when working.
